I took it on the lost coast of northern ca. In driving rain and wind, this gem held up just super great! I let my lower legs and feet get wet, and my torso was dry and warmer because of the wind blocking. I used it as a shade from the hot sun on my breaks, lying on the sand, it was my portable shade tree. I won't hike without it. (Posted on 4/28/16)

I have been using this umbrella forever. They are super light and durable. But, more importantly, everyone is jealous of me when I use this umbrella...while everyone is sweating under the hot sun, I'm just skipping along in the cool shade of my space dome. Oh, you'll get some weird looks, but just keep walking smugly by knowing that you're sweating less and avoiding harmful UV while those fools suffer and get burned. Don't be a dummy! Take this on every hike! (Posted on 4/3/16)

I am planning a 12-day trip to the mountains of New Mexico this summer. In researching the plan, many of the posts about this trek recommend an umbrella to provide shelter from the sun, as well as the dependable daily rain showers we can expect. I have to admit, I was skeptical about paying this much money for an umbrella, as well as the expectation of its durability. Coincidentally, especially in California, we had two separate weekend trips recently on which we were hammered with constant rains. This umbrella was amazing! It is so light, it's hard to imagine why everyone doesn't have one, just in case. The question of what to do with my trekking poles was easily answered when I found the umbrella fit perfectly under my shoulder strap and stayed there. I could not even tell I was carrying it, except that my entire upper body and my pack were dry!
With the Mylar top and the black underside, it looks to be well thought out for sun protection as well. I have not yet had occasion to use it on a bright sunny day, but I am looking forward to testing it out next month on another long weekend trek. Gossamer Gear has totally nailed this item. At 8oz, with the strap, you cannot go wrong! (Posted on 3/23/16)

I also carried this umbrella on a through hike of the PCT 9 years ago. I had intended to send it home afer the desert but found it too useful. I was in a snow blizzard and lots of weather in Washington and Crater Lake, Ore. I am now buying one for my A.T. hike since I have put many more miles on it and my grandson wanted it for a souvenir. I am shocked at the price . I may have kept the old one had I known it had increased so much. (Posted on 3/1/16)

This umbrella weighs only one oz. more than the Mont Bell collapsing umbrella with the silver exterior. Under anything other than a driving rain it will keep your torso and waist prett dry, but you will want some coverage below unless you are comfortable with wet legs. NOTE : The umbrella has MAP pricing - the cost charged is set by the manufacturer - GG staff (Posted on 3/11/15)
Thru-hike Necessity Review by SllowBro

Even though there wasn't a lot of rain on my thru of the PCT last year (2014), the umbrella was invaluable as shade in the desert. And later even in the Sierra, on up in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. I carried my Swing-Lite umbrella the whole way. It held up to fierce winds, driving rain, snow, and of course sunshine. It decreased my need for water in the desert probably saving its weight every day for the first 700 miles. In Washington, during constant rain it was awesome, improving my mood by 100%. It was an instant shelter during breaks along the trail. I ditched the case and just attached a piece of elastic at the top with a loop at the other end for the handle so I could sling it if I didn't want to put it back in the pack. The Swing-Lite can be inverted without harm. Just flip it back. Seriously good piece of gear. (Posted on 2/27/15)
