A sub-1lb pack that is durable Review by Paul Mags

For those who hike a little bit more off the beaten path, and still want to go very light, the Kumo is a wonderful pack.

I do a fair amount of off-trail travel (vs bushwhacking) and the Kumo has been wonderful. A bit more durable than other sub-1lb packs, I have done third class scrambles up ridges, hiked my way through forests and explored the canyon country.

If your base packweight is sub-10lbs and your idea of trip planning is to look at a map and not a guidebook for a trail, it is an excellent pack.

I completed the Camino de Santiago in April and May 2014. Kumo was the perfect pack. It was midsize so I couldn't overpack.
The best features are the ample, accessible pockets. Grabbing my water bottle was easy and storing my wallet, camera, emergency phone, and precious few souvenirs in the waist belt was ideal. It also held a Riksak for my evening outings.

After 38 days together, I was a little afraid to put to put my dear companion in the cargo hold of EasyJet and Air Canada planes. Despite it being featherweight it is a tough bag and made it through like a champ.

Can't wait to walk it across the U.K. next year! (Posted on 9/20/14)
Met all my expectations Review by someonegivemeatrailnamalready

Until recently It has been more than 30 years since I last backpacked. After a bit of researching I realized I needed to replace practically all my gear. Wanting to go ultralight, and planning a 4 day/3 night backpacking trip on the AT around Damascus VA, I felt the Kumo would suit my needs. I figured I could get a G4 like my friend did, but I felt that by having a smaller pack I would be forced to keep what I brought down to a minimum.

As it ended up it performed flawlessly for me and met all my expectations. My pack weight for the trip less food and water was 11.5 lbs. I started day one with 6lbs of food and 2L of water for a total pack weight around 22lbs.

In the the main compartment of the Kumo I places our 2 man Tarptent, my sleeping quilt in a compression sack (about the size of a cantaloupe), the Primus version of a Jetboil stove, a down sweater, thin thermal legs, fire starter kit, equipment repair kit, two plastic 8oz bottles of Everclear, all the food (except snacks) a Nalgene bottle and the pack was not full. The side pockets each carried one 1L platypus of H2O. The big pocket on the back carried my windbreaker, rain gear, first aid, water purification kit, snacks, solar cell phone charger, ect. I also used the Nightlight Sleeping Pad (Torso length) as the soft frame in place of the included SitLight pad that I left at home.

The pack road so comfortably I seriously forgot it was there most of the time!

Note that this was in September in Virgina - wet with highs in the low 70s and lows in the mid 50s. I believe I could have carried up to 5 days of food with all the gear I had, but my insulation layers were minimal. in colder conditions where bulkier clothing / sleeping gear is needed I feel you would need a bigger pack than this (due to volume) if you are backpacking for more than just a night or two.

The only thing I will do differently is I will be researching options and upgrading my sleeping pad. For me at 49 years old 6" - 180 lbs I need a softer sleeping surface than the torso length pad can provide. For me comfort wins out over weight if I can sleep better.

GG you have a winner with Kumo! (Posted on 9/17/14)
