A Backpacker's Backpack... Review by Conrad

Bought this pack after much research before hitting the Colorado Trail for my first thru hike. I bought the mariposa after debating the Jam and the ULA conduit and I am really glad I did (got to inspect many of these packs along the trail and again, couldn't be happier with my selection)... This pack was great for me(italics) because it perfectly compliments my gear. The long mesh side pocket was perfect my tent (tarptent rainbow 2 btw) my dslr (i know, weighty) on the side pocket and a water bottle on the other. The kangaroo pouch on the front was perfect for rain gear, hip belts stashed my trail mix and clif bars (better known as poop bars). The zipper pocket on the top held my databook/maps, and other semi-frequently used knick-knacks. Never liked the sleeping bag compartments on bags, so love the single compartment design of the mariposa which fit my sleeping bag, clothes, food, etc perfectly... I'ma for sure bushwhackin' kinda guy and was quasi worried about the durability of the mesh pockets tearing when snagging on inevitable bad-attitude branches n such; so I made habit of just hiking with the raincover permanently on. This was partly due to the season I was hiking in, but also for the added protection of the pack (much easier to replace a raincover than a $240 pack.) My buddy agreed with this logic and so we ritually hiked with the raincovers on and haven't looked back. He will be buying the mariposa before the PCT this spring. I ramble, back to the point, buy this pack, from my experience, it seems obcviously designed BY and FOR the thru-hiker. Godspeed Gossamer, godspeed (Posted on 9/12/14)
great all around lightweight backpack Review by dbrawner

I backpack with my young son so I have to carry for one and a half . I wanted a light weight backpack that had the volume and caring weight for longer trips. I couldn't be happier.
A great feature is the removal back pad that you can use as a seat cushion or fold it over and wrap your jacket around it and instant pillow.
The only modification i would like to see is maybe a front shoulder strap vertical pocket that i can put a cliff bar in.

Mariposa has comfort and weight capacity Review by Fireweed

I used the Mariposa for hiking on the CDT this spring through New Mexico and southern Colorado. I could carry a gallon of water if necessary without discomfort--something I was leery of and kept me from buying a lightweight pack. I also love the extended pack body that allows for packing more stuff, or can be folded over when not necessary. I love being able to pack my tent on the outside. In this way I can avoid having to dry my tent out from rainstorms or condensation before I pack it. I also love the mesh pocket on the back, where I can put wet raingear and anything I want to access during the day. One problem--the metal stay in the body of the pack wears through the fabric of the waist belt where it touches and the waistbelt core was exposed when I finally figured out this was happening after talking to another hiker with the same problem. I have had to put duct tape on the waistbelt to protect it from the metal stay rubbing and also from rubbing from bottom part of the shoulder strap. The material on the waistbelt should be beefed up in those areas. (Posted on 8/27/14)

I have used this pack for a couple of years now. Been hiking all over the Great downunder OZ. The pack has been perfect. Very light. Holds all my stuff - up to 15kg with no problem what so ever. Highly recommend the pack to my friends and others with no reservations. (Posted on 7/16/14)

This pack is light enough and versatile enough to serve all four seasons. It handles 10 plus pounds without need of a stay and with the addition of an inflatable framesheet substitute 25 pounds is fine. Above that, a stay and framesheet could handle a pretty heavy payload but I haven't needed it though the volume is there if used wisely. No quality issues, everything has held up fine to established trail hiking and light trail blazing. This pack is the only one I need. (Posted on 5/27/14)
Great capacity, build quality and comfort - Perfect pack! Review by Barrie

At just under 2lbs it certainly beats any other pack I've had but, given that it's a third of the weight of my last pack I wasn't sure about durability. Well, it seems very well built and is standing up well so far.
The big surprise to me was just how well it fits and how comfortable it is. I'm 6'4" and 230 lbs and ordered the XL with an XL belt and it's a great fit, a little larger than it needs to be if anything.
The shoulder straps and hip belt are a nice width, spreading the load well and avoiding pressure points.
Main compartment is roomy enough for a bear can plus pretty much everything else I carry. Long side pocket is perfect for my Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 tent so I don't have to unpack everything when I reach my destination. Hip belt pockets are nice and large so I can get trail snacks, map, compass and phone in there.
These guys thought of everything, very impressed! (Posted on 3/21/14)

We did about 8 days on the PCT late this summer {Sept 2013}
going over Forester Pass and ultimately Mt Whitney from the Guitar Lake side. Saw several afternoons with rain, but nothing got wet in my Mariposa. After Mt. Whitney we stayed at Trail camp with wind {about 15 to 20 mph} in the evening with some rain. Again nothing wet. This is an extremely stable pack. I had the stays in because we had to carry bear canisters and it never shifted or became uncomfortable. This pack can easilycarry a full size bear canister with extra clothes, tent, sleeping bag, water purification system or whatever. I've used it several times since for fall trips being we're back in Alaska. I looked at several packs before the PCT trip and glad to report the Mariposa is a keeper. (Posted on 1/14/14)

My Mariposa has seen about 1000 miles over the last five years, mostly AT and western NC. It's versatility is outstanding. This backpack encourages creativity, as it is set up to customize. You can use whatever kind of padding you want for the back. I use my inflatable mattress. The exterior pockets make organization and access simple. This really makes a difference in getting in and out of camp quickly. I also remove the stays and use it for a 45 liter kayak bag, for portages and distant camps from the shore. Most importantly, the Mariposa is a great product because it invites users to innovate and think creativity about their trail systems. Tinker with it. Have fun. From 12 pounds to 25 plus 8 liters of water, this thing is an incredible value for a well-appointed UL pack that can handle week-long winter trips without resupply. (Posted on 10/6/13)

Great backpack. I use it for solo trips in the Sierras. Easily holds bear canister, sleeping bag, shelter etc. with plenty room to spare.

Only thing I would change on this pack is the top closure. The top has a long narrow opening. A shorter closure would suffice. I have modified my pack by cutting and adding buttons so it is easier to access contents. (Posted on 9/14/13)

Since making the jump to UL gear and picking up my Mariposa backpack my back and legs have never been happier! This is a great all around backpack with plenty of room for multi day excursions. I just finished 6 days and 5 nights in Yosemite NP with mine carrying a bear canister and total weight was around around 30lbs. Very comfortable pack and highly recommended! These guys at GG make some great products! (Posted on 9/4/13)
