I have only done two trips with the pack and so far I really like it, I stay around 25 lbs for 2-3 day trips and the pack has some room to spare (3 season). The mesh pocket is great for wet stuff, and I got two shoulder and two hip belt pockets for quick access and organization. I recommend it. (Posted on 5/11/15)

I've stuffed up my G4 and taken it on a few day hikes and overnights in perpetration for my next long trip. It is really comfortable. I use gossamer gears sleeping pad as a frame and it sits well on my hips. With the hip belt, sleeping pad and sternum strap, a lot of weight is taken off my shoulders. Normally I would wish for a couple extra features, but this backpack is just as simple as can be, and works perfectly. I am happy with the weight of this pack. With the gossamer gear sleeping pad it really brings my pack weight down. Definitely a pack worth looking into if the minimalistic design works for you! (Posted on 3/26/15)

I just received my new G4 in black and its perfect. Its going to replace my DIY pack I made 20 years ago. Thanks for the simple, useful design.

I've only used it for hauling items home from the library an grocery store, but have plans later this winter for a ski trip to the BWCA and a spring thru hike of the superior hiking trail. (Posted on 12/22/14)
New Black G4 vs older G4's?Review by Darryl

I just received my all black G4. I have 2 others (dk green) that I bought within the last 4 years that I just love. I also own 2 of the older & lighter Mariposas. Black looks really cool but I noticed that this newer pack does not have the Velcro shoulder straps that allows the user to add more padding like my other G4s. Not so sure I want to take this newer pack on a trip now as I am a older guy and do like the option of adding additional padding. (Bubble wrap). I also don't see the "made in USA" tag as on my other G4 packs so maybe the manufacturer has changed. Still a very good pack and the value is great but maybe no longer a tremendous value without having the ability to add padding and maybe not made in the USA?. (Posted on 11/28/14)
Best backpack for a small kidReview by Kai

My 71 lb 12 year old son is determined to through hike the John Muir Trail this summer and while he has lots of experience backpacking since he was 5 this involves a long carry between supply. His old pack just can't cut it. Since I am a happy user of the Mariposa I started looking for a small high capacity pack for him at Gossamer. At first it looked hopeless to fit his 13 inch torso (barely) and 23 inch waist but with some thought we tried the G4. What a great choice. Using the sit pad and lightly inflate his ground pad the small waist strap closes just fine. Took it out for a pretty rugged 20 mile overnight outing and the pack worked great. The hike involved trail, cross country and a couple of miles through a major burn out with lots of burned down trees to scramble over our under. Nothing ripped and pack was really stable. He loves the pack. If you have kids who are hard to fit and need capacity this it the pack for them. (Posted on 4/13/14)

Love love love this pack. It is light but still roomy and durable. My son also enjoys it. We have the medium and we are 5' 7" with 34" waists and the size we purchased is right on the money. I will buy another soon, (Posted on 3/25/14)
The "standard"; can't go wrong with this one but there's a few downsidesReview by Gideon

Firs off, I'm an ultralight hiker; the GG Murmur is my main 3 season pack but I needed a winter pack that was still an ultralight pack. The G4 fits this bill and it's a simple, straightforward workhorse. You can't go wrong with this pack, however...

There are a few minor issues I have with this pack.

First of all there's no place inside the pack to secure a small stowage sack; no little loop or place to clip to. Secondly, the shoulder strap's are a bit too short. When stuffed with quilts for hammock camping I was at the full length of the shoulder straps. It's a bit different how they go to the outside bottom edge. So when the pack is full it makes it too tight/short. Weird how there's a buckle and clip on the ends of the two shoulder straps; seem odd and almost as a means of keeping the straps from pulling through the buckle. I'm a short guy using the medium size and have to figure out how to mod the shoulder straps so they're long enough when I'm wearing my winter gear.

Finally, I hate the separate waist belt pockets. The move too much and fall towards the buckle; go with out them or figure out a way of securing them to the waist belt so they don't move.

So, all in all a decent pack but I think there are much better ones out there!

Gideon

SIDE NOTE FROM GG STAFF : A velcro tab is located on the hip belt pockets that attaches into the the velcro on the belt - if attached the pocket will not slide (Posted on 2/9/14)

I've owned my G4 for well over 10 years and it's never let me down. It's been to the top of Kilimanjaro and 3 weeks trekking in Africa, trekking through Alaska, as well as many many backpacking trips. I've over loaded it too many times and not one ripped thread. (Posted on 12/14/13)
