My go-to for 2-3-day, 3-season, on-trail trips in the US Northeast Review by DuncanJiisan

How does that saying go again? "Perfection is achieved not when there's nothing more to add, but when there's nothing left to take away." This pack comes pretty close to it.

Context: I hike religiously - almost every weekend - and have my system so dialed that I only need a small pack for the job. For that, I find most packs too bloated with features and insufficient in thinking about the user experience. The Murmur has become my go-to for the past 10 months of use mainly because it does everything I need it to and nothing more.

The goods: Height and girth of the side pockets are my favorite features. I can take out my water bottle or water bags, drink, and return them without breaking stride. This saves me 20-30 minutes of hiking time per day. Next comes the generously stretchy yet durable-for-its-weight outer mesh pocket. I don't baby my gear and have over stuffed that pocket numerous times when I had to carry other people's shelter and extra food. Not a puncture after months of use and abuse.

The not-so: I still find it too cumbersome to open and close the main compartment. The opening is too small for speedy loading. Then I've gotta synch the thing AND clip two buckles. I much prefer a roll top enclosure. Combination between small opening and the black fabric makes it hard to see inside. Not a big problem for me because I don't access that compartment frequently and when I do need to I tend to empty it anyway.

Bottom line: I think you'll find yourself grabbing this one over your other packs time and again if your system works better with simplicity than features. (Posted on 9/24/14)
Completed AT Thru Hike with this pack Review by Bear Bag

A week ago I summited Mount Katahdin, ME, completing my dream of thru hiking that Appalachian Trail. I am so glad that I had the Murmur with me! It was light, easy to pack and sat very well. Most importantly, it was easy to fix. On any 2000 mile hike a a pack is bound to tear or rip (everyone's packs had holes at the end of our journey) The Murmur's brilliantly simple design makes it the perfect pack for hyperlight long distance hikers. For most of my trip my pack weighed under 14 lbs with food and water and this pack was one of the main reasons why! (Posted on 9/7/14)
Awesome 3 season UL pack Review by dirtbaghiker

What's to say about this awesome lightweight pack? I finaly got my pack weight under 10 lbs so I decided to try the Murmur Hyperlight pack. It performed as expected if not better. I removed the hip belt as it is NOT needed. My base weight is about 6 pounds, so there is no need for that belt. The pack fits comfortable with around 10 lbs (food/water). I can grab my smartwater bottle on the move and replace it in the side pocket without having to be double jointed..This I really appreciated. I also can store my empty soft platy and sawyer mini in the other pocket. The outer mesh pocket is perfect to store my tp, small first aid kit and rain gear for easy access. It's also large enough to store my patrol shelter if needed. I have no complaints about the top closure of the Murmur, In fact I will say that I love it. So simple with no gadgets or bells n whistles. It covers everything and protects all my gear inside. I do use a plastic liner bag inside to keep my gear dry. Nothing can or will fall out of the pack so don't even make that a concern. I will say the pack is perfect for my 3 season backpacking trips here in North East New York. It looks great it feels great it packs great because it is great. Thanks Gossamer Gear for making an outstanding lightweight pack! (Posted on 8/3/14)
Gossamer Gear Murmur Hyperlight pack..LOVE IT!! Review by dirtbaghiker

Just got this pack 2 days ago. Though I can not comment on long term durability yet, I will gladly leave my first impressions of the Murmur Hyperlight. It is definitely hyperlight! The quality and construction of this pack is impeccable, top notch. The stitching in and out is clean, tight and we'll done. I love the mesh pocket on the back. I can store my first aid kit, rain gear(if needed), windshirt (if needed),sawyer mini filter, and also stuff my tarp in there if it's wet. The side pockets are plenty huge. I can easily put a smart water bottle and my soft platy bottles in them with no problems or worries of them falling out. I can also access them while walking without having to remove the pack...easily! I like the fold top closure. There is no way any gear can fall out of this system...unless maybe you are over packing. Remember, this pack is a true ultralight pack, so you will have minimal gear to carry. I packed it up last night and my total weight minus food and water was 5 lbs 4 ounces. I will probably remove the hip belt as it is not needed. I am 5 ft 10 and weigh approximately 220-225 lbs, my waist is 37-38. The Murmur fit be perfect. I can't wait to use it on the trails and I am sure I will get satisfied results for a long time using this pack for 3 seasons in the north east. (Posted on 7/3/14)
Wonderful Pack! Review by Rary

Overall a fantastic little pack! Super lightweight, simple, durable and comfortable. I've been using the Murmur for about 6 months now, mostly on short to medium length hikes. My total weights rarely exceed 15 pounds. I'm a very big fan of the Over The Top closure system; it hasn't failed me yet and it keeps my gear very secure. The large back mesh pocket is great for small stuff you want to access throughout the day. The quality of the stitching is flawless, not one thread out of place. I'm a smallish 13 year old and the torso length is fine for me. I removed the sternum strap since I never used it. I can't think of one negative thing to say about this pack. I've really enjoyed using this pack and I know I will continue to do so for many years to come. (Posted on 6/5/14)
Awesome Ultralight Pack Review by Arkansas Redneck

Great little pack especially for dayhikes. Also an integral part of my ultralight backpacking setup. It can be a challenge for backpacking due to the low volume more so than the weight limit. Spends most of its time as my day pack carrying less than 15lbs which it excels at especially considering the low weight of the pack itself. The cinch on top not closing completely is my biggest complaint. My Youtube video review of the pack: http://youtu.be/Xe6YbIXoHxQ (Posted on 4/18/14)
Great UL Pack Review by Ducky

This is by far one of the best UL Packs on the market. It is a little less durable than the competition but as long as you're not abusing your pack it should hold up for many many years. One Thing I have to say is, this pack is much larger than it seems. Many reviews talk about it being a smaller minimalist pack, but this thing has room to spare. I love it, and am so happy with my purchase. (Posted on 4/15/14)
Very Comfortable Daypack Review by Nanceg

I use the Murmur as daypack, and for 2 to 3 night backpacking trips, and have enjoyed using it. It is a joy to hike with...I love the large mesh pocket on the front, and the spacious side pockets. I like to use the 23.7oz size Smartwater bottles - they fit nicely and are easy to retrieve. I'm a small framed 5'6" female, and the shoulder straps need to be cinched up all the way on me. I have no issue with the minimal hip strap, it works fine for me. However, I would like to suggest that the hip strap buckles be a different color from the shoulder strap buckles, because I would frequently get them buckled up incorrectly - they got crossed...as they look and feel identical. (The ends of the shoulder straps, buckle around your chest) . I carry around 15 pounds and it feels great on me. I wasn't sure if I would like the top closure method...there were no instructions included on how to close the pack...but with using a plastic bag liner, I've never had a issue with my gear falling out. So, overall - It has held up fine- no noticeable wear. I've learned to trust the top closure, the price was good, and it's amazingly light and designed with simple clean lines - which I love. I recommend it. (Posted on 10/25/13)
Love and Hate Review by Frank/Germany

I have used this rucksack intensively on Gomera and a fortnight on Corsica (GR20) with full ultralight equipment without food or cooking up to 6 kilos . Excellent weight, fantastic shoulder straps, pure and functional, virtually disappears in the tent when unpacked. Looks fragile but made it all the way on Corsica (about 250 km) in the mountains. So I don't complain about quality personally, but would like to mention that my trader fluncked them, because of too many quality problems (he had to control each one before sale). I love this rucksack and I hate it for one basic reason. It's naive not to give it a broad hip belt. I don't mean one of the clusmsy ones. Wouldn't the material of the shoulder straps make a good hip belt (broad, light and comfortable)? I curse Gossamer each time the present hipbelt hurts or feels uncomfortabe. I drop two stars for that! But because of lacking alternatives I'm using it still. Improve the hipbelt and I would give 5 stars. (Posted on 8/5/13)
Great little pack Review by Marco

A little pack with lots of oomph! I took this pack for two weeks along the Northville-Placid Trail. Except for socks, a bottle of DEET and some hot dogs at Blue Mountain/Lake Durant, there was no resupply in that two weeks. Total weight was 27-3/4 pounds when I started, total when I finished was about 10 pounds which included another couple days of food (had to have the hot dogs.) The pack took all the rain the trail threw at it. And, it carried great thruout the trip! A nice pack. (Posted on 7/18/13)
