Join Trail Ambassador Philip Werner for an Appalachian Mountain Club Compass Navigation Practice Hike to Mt Clough.
Are your compass navigation skills a bit rusty? If so, we’ll practice planning an off-trail route, following a compass bearing, and interpreting terrain features as we hike to Mt Clough (3651′), a trailless peak on the NH Hundred Highest list. Located at the foot of Mt Moosilauke, Mt Clough (pronounced ‘ruff’) is a rounded slide-scarred dome that should provide some fun scrambling as well as great views. We’ll start this hike by following the Tunnel Brook Trail to Mud Pond before heading off-trail. All participants should bring a compass, but please leave your GPS at home. Some experience using a compass and map is required, but please don’t feel that you need to be an expert. Our goal is to give you an opportunity to practice, work together, and learn how to hike efficiently off-trail. Total distance 7.5 miles. 5.0 miles on trail and 2.5 miles off trail. May be combined with leader’s other weekend hike.
