Massachusetts: Central Cascades Oregon AMC August Camp Slideshow and Potluck

Join Gossamer Gear Trail Ambassador and AMC Leader Julie LePage for a slideshow presentation on the Central Cascades in Oregon, the location of next summer’s AMC August Camp! What can you expect from Oregon? 10,000 ft snow-capped mountain volcanoes, obsidian glass dotting in the surrounding Wilderness Areas, visiting the majestic Crater Lake National Park, Smith Rock State Park, excellent Oregon craft beer…. and don’t forget luxuriating in nearby hot spring resorts!

About AMC’s August Camp: Since the late 1800’s, August Camp is an AMC tradition! August Camp is a month-long, nomadic overnight camp that moves to a new location out West each year. All meals, tent setup, transportation to and from camp, and friendly hike leaders are included in your 1 or 2 week stay. You only need to pack up your backpack, get to the Portland airport and enjoy! Previous winter hiking experience and full winter gear required. 12.2 miles with 2600 feet of elevation gain. Can be combined with leaders’ hike to Garfield Mountain on the previous day, Feb 8th. Join leaders on a winter hike to Mt Garfield (4500), one of the most dramatic and recognizable 4000 footers in the White Mountains with fine views into the western Pemigewasset Wilderness from the old fire tower foundations at its summit. Join leaders for a 1-night winter backpack in the Sandwich Range where we will climb the icy cliffs of Mount Whiteface (4020’) and the great wooded dome of Mount Passaconaway (4043’), visiting viewpoints on Mounts Hibbard (2940’) and Wonalancet (2760’) on our return journey. This is a good trip for hikers with some winter hiking and overnight backpacking experience to gain more experience. Full winter gear required. 14 miles w/4500 feet of elevation. This is an Appalachian Mountain Club trip.

New Hampshire: Winter Hike to Tom and Field

Join Leaders for a moderate winter day hike to Mount Tom and Mount Field, two of the New Hampshire 4000 footer peaks near Crawford Notch. Suitable for fit beginners who have completed one of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Winter Hiking training programs, this hike will be at a moderate pace with a book time of approx. 5 hours. Snowshoes and traction devices will be required. The hike will be a 7.35 mile loop with +2,377 feet of elevation gain.
