Vicky “Mama Moab” Mattson

VickyMattson

Vicky has been an avid outdoors person since 1980 when she landed in Salt Lake City. She began a lifetime love of the mountains and desert with the Wasatch Mountain Club. While attending the University of Utah she taught downhill skiing in the winter and guided whitewater trips in the summer. By the mid 1990s She lived in Moab, Utah full time as the Sales Director of a couple of white water companies. She met her husband Kevin in 1997 and followed him to New Jersey of all places. She hiked the Adirondacks and Catskills every weekend. When Vicky and Kevin adopted their infant son, Jay, Vicky promised him that someday they would hike the PCT together. Kevin acquired a professor post at Ohio University in 2000, from then on they backpacked and canoed all summer every summer.

The Mattson family explored the deeper wilderness areas of the lower 48. In 2011 Vicky deemed Jays legs long enough for a PCT attempt. They started at Campo, CA in March of 2011, finishing the California section in 2011 and Washington and Oregon the next summer.

It was during the PCT hike that Vicky became an Ultralight hiker. At the start of the PCT She had a 6 LB Lowe backpack and a 6 Lb tent. By Cajon Pass it was clear that system had to go. When they returned to Kick Off She won a gossamer gear pack at the silent Auction. Ever since that has been her favorite pack. On a recent trip to Cumberland Island, Georgia; Vicky, Jay and 2 other friends had the tiniest and lightest packs around.
