New Hampshire: Map and Compass Instructional Weekend (9/26-9/28)

Join Trail Ambassador Philip Werner for an introduction to the black art of off-trail hiking and cross-country compass navigation, including two days of hands-on practice.  If you’ve always wanted to learn truly how to use a compass, this is the course for you. We’ll cover maps, compass, navigation, and intentional bushwhacking, and will then apply these skills to hike two actual trail-less mountains. New Hampshire: Off-Trail Hike to The Captain

Join Trail Ambassador and Appalachian Mountain Club hiking an dbackpacking leader, Philip Werner, for this rarely offered bushwhack to The Captain (3540′), a New Hampshire Hundred Highest Peak named for its resemblance to El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Located in a seldom visited ravine between Mt Carrigan and the Hancocks, the peak is also known as Carrigan Pond Peak after the remote pond near its base.  Previous off-trail hiking and compass experience is preferred, but not required. Join Trail Ambassador and Appalachian Mountain Club Leader, Philip Werner, for a bushwhack to Wolf Cub Mountain (3063′), a New Hampshire 3000 footer located near Kinsman Notch and Mt Wolf. We’ll start this hike by following the Kinsman Ridge Trail (AT) tagging Blue Ridge Mountain, North Peak (just off trail) on the way to Gordon Pond, before heading off-trail to Wolf Cub.
