Just spent 3 days on Laugavegur trail in Iceland. High winds and heavy rains, but this tent stood firm. I stayed warm and dry inside. My sleeping pad fit perfectly with a bit of room for gear at my head. Vestibule was great for my pack. Highly recommend.
Did a two night backpacking trip and some of our camp sites were very small. The size worked out well for me. I liked the easy no hassle set up. I can set up tent in minutes. This tent is probably too small for some people. I had enough room for sleeping and a place for my pack at my feet. I liked the fact that my sleeping pad fit right in and couldn't slide around. The light weight is nice. I also have a Durston X Mid 1. I only used it two times and for some reason the bug netting had small holes everywhere. I contacted them and they basically told me oh well. I think it was defective from the beginning. I will be using the free on 50 mile 6 day hike on the PCT.
So easy to set up the poles just seem to snap into place and it almost sets itself up for you. I used to have a TNF one person tent that was similar but heavier and narrower. The free is wide enough to accommodate my 25in wide sleeping pad and my gear stows nicely in the vestibule. It is nice to have the protection of a double walled tent in rainy conditions or in areas where there is condensation. I also like having the option to sleep without the fly and just have protection from mosquitoes with the netting so I can stargaze all night. This is really well designed, there are so many pockets and small details that make it really special. I wear glasses and there is a nice pocket for them inside the tent so I can find them easily in the mornings and watch the sunrise.
Lightweight, simple, easy to use, and high quality
This past weekend I snuck away to the Flattop Mountains just south of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for a quick overnight of fly fishing and camping in the headwaters of the Yampa River. After finding a beautiful campsite beneath a grove of Ponderosa pines with views of Flattop Mountain, I decided to give the new Gossamer Gear Free 1P its first night in the field. The first thing that impressed me was how quickly it went up. The freestanding DAC pole system clips together easily, and the custom aluminum corner feet securely hold the poles in place, making setup fast and frustration-free. Once inside, the tent felt surprisingly spacious for a lightweight one-person shelter. The unique pole bends create excellent headroom and more usable interior volume, while the foot-end design keeps your sleeping bag away from the walls and leaves room for gear. Combined with the lightweight ripstop fabric, great ventilation, and compact packed size, the Free strikes a really nice balance between comfort, simplicity, and packability. I slept with the fly off under a sky full of stars and came away excited to take it on many more trips this season.
